The Retiro district is centred around its emblematic park and includes the neighbourhoods of Ibiza, Pacífico, Adelfas, Niño Jesús, Estrella and Los Jerónimos. The park’s history dates back to the construction of the Monastery of Los Jerónimos, of which a cloister and the Church of San Jerónimo el Real still remain. Beside this complex, Philip II established a place for retreat and reflection, which gave the area its name. Charles III later opened the grounds to all Madrid residents.
It is hardly surprising that in 2021 the “Landscape of Light”, comprising Paseo del Prado, El Retiro and the Jerónimos neighbourhood, was added to UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Within just a few streets are architectural and cultural landmarks such as Palacio de Cibeles, the Royal Botanical Garden, the Prado Museum and Cuesta de Moyano. The area also has a strong gastronomic appeal, with wine bars, tapas venues and more innovative proposals.
